Wyred Up receives government praise
16 February
Wyre Council has received praise from the government's Cabinet Office for Wyred Up, its highly successful collaboration with local businesses.
In a letter to the council's Chief Executive, Nick Hurd MP, Minister for Civil Society, said: "I would like to congratulate you on delivering a project which is clearly welcomed and needed by the people that you support and I hope that you are justifiably proud of the valuable contribution you are making.
"I do not underestimate the challenges of delivering projects such as Wyred Up in the current financial climate, nor how important they are to the many people they support."
Mr Hurd also commended the council for it's drive and commitment in running Wyred Up and enabling people to take positive action to influence what is going on around them, something that is at the core of the government's Big Society agenda.
Councillor Peter Gibson, Leader of Wyre Council said: "This is well deserved recognition of the work that the council does to support the private sector in Wyre.
"With over 4,000 local companies currently engaging with Wyred Up, it is one of the most successful collaborations in the North West in terms of networking and inter trading. We have established strong relationships with business owners to ensure that they steer the direction of Wyred Up, and that the work we do continues to meet the diverse and changing needs of our businesses."
Councillor Gordon McCann, Cabinet member with responsibility for economic development added: "Wyre has many dedicated and innovative business owners and Wyred Up provides opportunities for these people to get together, share working practices and trade with each other.
"It is essential to keep business in Wyre in order to stimulate our economy and for companies and members of the public alike to buy goods and services locally, rather than use larger businesses that are farther afield.
"We anticipate significant investment in Wyre over the next few years and we want to ensure that local businesses tap into this. The continued support of the private sector and growth of the local economy remain priorities for the council."
Set up after businesses identified a need to utilise each other's services to help ride the recession, Wyred Up brings together local businesses and all Wyre’s support partners for business development, employment, skills and training, at regular networking events and online.
It aims to support local businesses in working together to strengthen the local economy, encourage local people to buy goods and services from local companies and provide people with skills and training to help improve their career prospects.
Jane Littlewood, business owner and Chair of Wyred Up said: "Wyred Up is a true partnership arrangement between the private sector and Wyre Council. The private sector steer has been vital to gaining business buy-in, and the public sector backing from the council is what's allowed it to develop and grow with true value.
"Personally, I'm delighted with the success we've achieved between us and really proud of the project and where it might go next - recognition from such a high level is truly rewarding."
Four networking events are held each year, which are free to local businesses, along with jobs and skills fairs and training events.
The next event takes place on Wednesday 14 March at Rossall School. Guest speakers from the award winning Seniors fish and chip shop in Thornton will be talking about their experiences and Parkinson building contractors, who are currently building the new observation tower at Rossall Point, will be discussing how businesses can get involved with their contracts. Representatives from Sainsbury's will also be present to talk about possible procurement opportunities prior to submission of their planning application for a new store in Thornton.
The event starts at 3pm, with guest speakers appearing at 4pm followed by a buffet and further networking until 6pm. It's completely free and all businesses in Wyre are welcome to attend.
